So what is LASIK?
LASIK which stands for Laser in-situ Keratomileusis, is used in vision correction to reduce moderate to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The most traditional LASIK procedure is fairly simple, a keratome is used by a doctor to carefully create a flap in the cornea. However in the most recent form of LASIK, IntraLASIK, the flap in the cornea is created by a computer monitored precision laser. The corneal flap is then lifted while an Excimer laser is used to reshape the tissue. The corneal flap is then gently and carefully put back into place which forms an occlusive steel through osmopic pressure. This pressure holds the flap securely into place allowing it to heal very quickly and does not require stitches.
There have been several studies on the matter and they have shown that when compared to other types of refractive surgeries, LASIK causes the least amount of discomfort for patients. It has also been reported by patients that they experienced an almost immediate improvement in vision following their LASIK procedure, and experienced a little to no discomfort during or after their procedure.
